Music lovers will delight in Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story at The John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, now running through Sunday, March 3, 2019. The show details Buddy Holly’s rise to fame and features over 20 of his greatest hits, including “That’ll Be The Day,” “Peggy Sue,” and “Raining in My Heart,” as well as Richie Valens’ “La Bamba” and The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” The show moves back and forth through poignant scenes from Buddy’s life–including when he met his wife–to rock and roll concert mode, with featured concerts at The Apollo Theater at the start of Buddy’s career with The Crickets and that fateful concert night in Iowa that was followed by the tragic airplane accident that killed three amazing musicians in 1959.

Buddy Holly’s 1950s music was a huge influence on the rock and roll music that followed. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame defines it: “The bespectacled ’50s teen idol roughed up familiar musical influences—rhythm & blues, rockabilly, country & western—with upbeat tempos, a jittery vocal approach, and youthful lyrics filled with edgy declarations of love, lust and heartbreak.” The music still speaks to today’s audiences, both young and old, who rose to their feet on more than one occasion in the audience at Engeman and remained riveted by the story while seated.

On February 3, 1959, while traveling from that Iowa concert in ClearLake, Holly died in a plane crash alongside fellow musicians Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Holly was only 22 years old and Valens was 17. This tragedy was “the day the music died,” as sung in “American Pie,” by Don McLean.

A British pal, who’s written and edited a couple volume’s on Holly, is at the Crystal Palace this week in MN celebrating Holly’s last show-actually on Crystal Lake in chilly weather, sub zero, if I could post a pic.
