At approximately 12:34 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018, the Halesite Fire Department was activated for reports of smoke and flames visible in a two-story house on Bay Drive West in Huntington Bay.  Hose Rescue Company Lieutenant KC Anna was on scene first with his son, Firefighter Taigue Anna, and reported the fire to Halesite Fire Department Dispatch.

Upon arrival, Chief Greg Colonna confirmed a working house fire and was advised by neighbors that the resident was not home, however the resident’s dog was in the house. The neighbors made efforts to locate the animal. The dog was found later by firefighters during fire operations, however, it had perished.

The first due engine crew attacked the fully involved and very hot house fire head-on, making entry into the house.  Firefighters aggressively attacked the flames on both the first and second floors of the house, and were able to extinguish them quickly. Approximately 50 firefighters were on scene and under the command of Chief Greg Colonna and Assistant Chief James Magerle.  Mutual aid was provided by the Centerport, Huntington and Huntington Manor fire departments at the scene, with standby fire and rescue coverage provided by the Cold Spring Harbor and Greenlawn FD’s.  Two Halesite firefighters were transported to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries and were later released. The Suffolk County Police Arson Squad is investigating the cause of the fire.
