At approximately 11 a.m. on December 22, 2017, the Halesite Fire Department was activated for a reported basement fire in the historical Bay Crest section of Huntington Bay.  Upon arrival, first due units requested reactivation of the alarm and mutual aid assistance for a fully involved working structure fire in an 8,000 square-foot mansion.  Fire was venting on nearly all windows throughout the first floor, with hot pressurized smoke venting from upper floors.  The Huntington Bay Police Chief was on scene and informed the FD units that the structure was empty with no occupants, and the mansion had a very hot and rapidly growing fire on the first and second floors.  Upon initial entry, fire crews reported collapse of the first floor into the basement and defensive operations were commenced. The scene was under the command of Chief Greg Colonna, with assistance from First Assistant Chief James Magerle and Second Assistant Chief Dom Spada. Chief Colonna said that the nearly 70 firefighters who battled the flames worked very hard in a highly coordinated effort. According Chief Colonna, the structure was surrounded quickly and fire crews made a valiant effort that exemplifies the professionalism and highly trained nature of the firefighters in this town. Mutual aid was provided by Huntington Fire Department, Centerport Fire Department, Huntington Manor Fire Department, Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department and Greenlawn Fire Department.  Northport Fire Department provided standby coverage and Huntington Community First Aid Squad stood by at the scene.  Town of Huntington Highway crew assisted in demolition of the structure during the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.
