The Melville Fire Department responded to a fire at Richie’s Citgo Station on Walt Whitman Road, Sunday night, January 29, 2017, at about 10:50 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find the building fully engulfed with flames coming out of all three service bays. Over 75 firefighters battled the blaze using 12 trucks from Melville, East Farmingdale, Huntington Manor, Plainview, Dix Hills and Farmingdale, Greenlawn and Syosset fire departments. The fire was declared under control shortly before 1 a.m. and was under the direction of Assistant Chiefs Chris Nolan, Dave Kaplan and Bill Schmitt. The building was extensively damaged along with several vehicles parked inside the service garage. There were no injuries reported and the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal.
