Following our report of the link between crime and illegal Huntington Station housing in last Thursday’s Tattler, two more incidents screeched across the headlines.

In the newest, Melissa Buchanan, 27, of 214 Beverly Road, was arrested for abandoning animals in her apartment. According to SCPD, Buchanan’s landlord called authorities after hearing a dog bark excessively and realizing she had not seen her tenant for a few days. Upon arrival police found two Miniature Australian Shepherd dogs, two lizards and a cat that had not been cared for. One of the dogs was deceased. While police were still at the scene, Buchanan returned and admitted to police she had not been home for several days. Buchanan was charged with six counts of Animal Cruelty.

TOH records indicate that 214 Beverly Road is a single family residence owned and occupied by Nick Safar. There is no indication that the property has legal apartments.

In the other incident, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini announced that Detectives from Narcotics Section, Special Operations Team, Criminal Intelligence, Firearms Suppression Team (FAST), Second Precinct Gang Unit and Crime Section officers executed two search warrants in Huntington Station. The action was directed at targeting drug dealers as part of new initiatives aimed at combating the narcotics epidemic in Suffolk County.

The first search warrant was executed at 194 W. 21st Street. It yielded approximately 110 grams of cocaine, a digital scale, assorted drug packaging material, a cell phone and more than $3500 in cash.

His brother, Gilmar Perez, 25, of the same address, was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance In or Near School Grounds, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree and two counts of Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd Degree.  Town records indicate that 194 W. 21st Street is a single family residence owned and occupied by Javier & Elisa Fuentes. There is no report of legal apartment permits at the site.

Another search warrant was executed at 58½ Lowndes Avenue, and resulted in the seizure 3 grams of cocaine, a digital scale and assorted drug packaging material, 4 cell phones and $139 in cash.  Ivan Oscar Martinez, 34, a building resident, was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance 2nd Degree, Criminal Sale Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, two counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance In or Near School Grounds, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree and two counts of Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd Degree.

Town records show that 58½ Lowndes Avenue is a single family residence owned by absentee landlord Community Properties, 794 Fort Salonga Road, Northport. Community Properties is a holding of real estate investor Donald Pius.
