The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to an early morning house fire on Arbor Lane in Dix Hills, at around 12 midnight on Wednesday, March 16. The residents, a couple and their pet dog, safely evacuated the home prior to the arrival of firefighters. Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz, the first to arrive on the scene, investigated and found fire coming from an air conditioning duct in a second floor bedroom. He closed the door and then shut the electrical panel which helped contain the fire. About 60 firefighters from Dix Hills with assistance from the Huntington Manor FD were on the scene with seven trucks, two ambulances, rehab and paramedic units. The Town of Huntington Cyanide Response Team was also activated for response. The Melville and Greenlawn FD’s provided standby coverage at Dix Hills headquarters. The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes, under the command of Dix Hills Fire Chief Robert Fling. The fire was contained to the attic and a second floor bedroom. There were no injuries reported, and the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating. This was the second house fire that Dix Hills fire/rescue volunteers have responded to in five days.
