Three Children in a Canoe Rescued on Long Island Sound

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued three children in a canoe from the Long Island Sound on Monday evening.

Davin Miles, 12, his brother Kenyon Miles, 10, and their friend Chris Gurr, 12, all of Huntington Station, launched their canoe from Crab Meadow Beach in Northport to go fishing in the Long Island Sound early yesterday evening. As they paddled out and away from the protection of the shoreline, the wind increased and they were blown approximately 1.5 miles offshore.

Marine Bureau Police Officers Michael O’Leary and Charles Marchiselli were on routine patrol in the Long Island Sound aboard patrol vessel Marine Bravo when they happened upon the three children. The officers determined that the children, who were all wearing flotation devices, were unable to paddle back to shore against the 15-20 mph wind and 2-foot waves and brought them and their canoe aboard the police boat.

The officers returned the children to their waiting parents on Crab Meadow Beach. The children were uninjured.

The Marine Bureau reminds boaters to always wear a personal flotation device, keep a careful watch on the weather forecast and beware of offshore winds, which can blow small paddle craft and inflatable boats offshore very quickly.
