Black ice caused by freezing rain created havoc on area roads and surfaces early Sunday morning, January 18, causing numerous auto accidents and slips and falls, which brought the response of volunteer fire departments and ambulance squads throughout the Town of Huntington. There were several crashes reported on the Northern State Parkway throughout the Dix Hills, Melville and Commack areas. During the height of the weather event, over a dozen ambulances were lined up in a logjam outside of the Huntington Hospital emergency room as patients were admitted and processed. In one incident, a Melville Fire Department Rescue Squad ambulance returning from the hospital was requested to handle a call by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad for a slip and fall victim on Merriwind Drive in Huntington. Melville’s crew arrived and called the Huntington Manor Fire Department for an assist to safely get the patient down the steep icy driveway. Firefighters applied an absorbent material to the driveway and used a rope to stabilize the stretcher as it was brought down the driveway.
