Fifty-One-Year-Old Woman Injured, Three Dogs Killed in House Fire

Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives and the Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of a fire that injured a 51-year-old woman in East Northport on 9 Barnett Place this afternoon.

Second Precinct Police Officers and members of the East Northport Fire Department responded to a fire at 9 Barnett Place in East Northport at approximately 2:40 p.m. When officers arrived, the rear of the home was fully engulfed. Five of the woman’s dogs were outside and she was attempting to put out the fire with a garden hose so that she could rescue three dogs that were trapped in the home.

The victim was transported by East Northport Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was treated and admitted for serious burn injuries. The five dogs that were outside of the home at the time of the fire were transported to a veterinary hospital. The three dogs that were in the home died.

Second Precinct Police Officers Officers Michael Yonelunas and Stephen Caratozzolo entered the burning home in attempt to locate the trapped dogs but were unable to find them due to heavy smoke and heat. Both officers were also was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for smoke inhalation where they were treated and released.

Arson is investigating the cause of the fire that appears to be non-criminal at this time.
