Northport Mother Arrested for Leaving her Two Young Children Unattended in Car during Heat Wave

Suffolk County Police today arrested a woman for leaving her two young children in a locked vehicle with the windows closed in the extreme heat at a store in Commack this afternoon.

A Good Samaritan noticed the two young children in the car in the Meat Farms’ parking lot, located at 134 Commack Road at 2:59 p.m. The woman alerted a store employee who then called police. When police arrived the mother had returned to her car, and her five-year-old and one-year-old sons were both sweating profusely, with flushed faces. Investigation revealed the children were in the car without proper ventilation for approximately six minutes.

The mother, Maria Luongo-Devivo, 49, of 14 Meadow Rue Lane, E. Northport, was arrested and charged with two counts of Child Endangerment.

The children were checked for any health issues at the scene, but did not need further medical attention. They were released to a neighbor.

Child Protective Services was notified.

Luongo-Devivo was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on August 1.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Gadzooks! What an idiot. There ought to be a school people attend to become parents!

  • this is wrong

So if your AC is broken in your car should you be taken out an shot I guess? She was gone for 6 minutes, how do you not know one of the kids was sick and just ran in for diapers or milk? Again, it was 6 minutes. There are currently NO laws on the books stating you cannot leave your children alone for any extended time. Scary. These children were removed from their natural born Mother and put through all this drama and you want to call the tattle tale a “good Samaritan”

    Wrong? What a ridiculous statement.

She left 2 small defenseless children in a 100plus degree car. ( and yes, at 80 degrees outside a car becomes 99degrees with in 10 minutes when the windows Are cracked…these windows were closed! And it was hotter than that outside yesterday )

A one yr old and a five yr old. How could that ever be right? (And if she left there to get milk, there is a Dairy Barn less than 3 minutes down the road).
Not only was the heat dangerous, what about the crazy people in the world who could have harmed those children.
At 49 this woman should have known better. She could have killed or seriously injured those children.
