Cuthbertson and Berland Speak at County Forum on Huntington Station Community Policing

Community Policing Forum

A Community Policing Forum was held to address crime issues in Huntington Station.

Huntington Town Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone April 22 to stress the Town-County cooperation that has made strides in addressing crime issues in Huntington Station

Speaking at a forum on community policing hosted by the Huntington Station Action Coalition NOW’s Community Development subcommittee, Councilman Cuthbertson noted that lifting a community requires all levels of government to come together. What made last night’s session encouraging, he said, was that it occurred not at a time of crisis, but as part of a continuing dialogue between government and the community.

Councilwoman Berland, in her remarks, noted that one of the best ways to combat crime was to provide jobs for youth. She spoke of a summer intern program she has been spearheading and suggested that audience members who have children encourage them to apply and that companies consider sponsoring an intern as part of the program.

County Executive Bellone, who gave the introductory remarks, spoke of his commitment to Huntington Station and to working with the community to address crime issues. He praised the Town for the level of cooperation among the Town, the County and the community.

Other speakers included Deputy Police Commissioner Riscoe Mention-Lewis; Insp. Edward Brady, commanding officer of the Second Precinct; Dr. Errol Toulon Jr., assistant deputy county executive for public safety; and Roderick A. Pearson, executive director of community services.

The forum is the first of three Community Police Listening Sessions County Executive Bellone’s office has scheduled. The others will be held May 8 in Central Islip and June 3 in Medford.
