Tragic Boating Accident on July 4th Leads to 3 Deaths

A 34-foot 1984 Silverton cabin cruiser, based in Huntington, was returning last night after watching the fireworks display off Lloyd Neck, just south of where Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor meet, when it is said to have capsized shortly after 10 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard and police investigators are investigating the cause of the capsizing, looking into the possibility of overcrowding, wakes from other boats and mechanical failure. Twenty-seven people were on the boat at the time of the accident, 10 of whom were children.

Police identified the three victims as David Aureliano, age 12, Harley Treanor, age 11, and Victoria Gaines, age 8.
