Letter to the Editor: Open House at Fire Departments on April 21

Halesite FD Chief, Andy Magerle

As part of National Volunteer Week, April 15th – 21st, FASNY (Firemen’s Association of the State of New York) is encouraging all volunteer fire departments to open their doors on April 21st and 22nd for the annual recruitment-based open house event.

The men and women of the Halesite Fire Department enthusiastically support FASNY in its efforts as we have done in the past. We encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to meet their local volunteers and see first hand what it means to help one’s neighbor in difficult times. Due to major road construction on the roads around the Halesite Fire Department, however, our open house event this year will be postponed until the setting is more conducive to this type of campaign.

In an effort to support FASNY’s extensive recruitment effort, Halesite will be showing its support by attending a press conference at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum on Monday, April 16th at 1:00 p.m. In attendance will be FASNY Vice President Bob McConville, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, Museum officials and a couple of other fire departments. I have asked 1st Assistant Chief Dan McConnell to represent the department at this event. He will discuss the fire department’s success in using social media in its recruitment efforts. In 2011, these efforts helped grow the fire department’s membership by more than 20%.

Sincerely,
Andy Magerle
Chief of Department
Halesite Fire Department
