Living it Up at the Long Island Fall Festival in Huntington Village

The Village Tattler is proud to be a media sponsor of the 18th Annual Long Island Fall Festival this year. Visitors to Heckscher Park today got to dry off in the sun after being soaked from the rain the last five days in a row.  Bright sunshine on a warm fall day equals perfect festival weather and it was a great start to the festivities that will continue all weekend through Sunday, October 2 at 10 p.m.

We spotted a couple of new rides for the kids this year: a wall climbing ride that looked better than it probably was, and the Starship Gravitron, a ride that some kids LOVED from the looks we saw coming out and others really hated. Lots of the rides from last year were being enjoyed this year, too, such as the Carousel, always a family pleaser, and the Himalaya, for the older kids and older kids at heart. Same healthy and nutritious food for everyone as always, with a wider variety of choice than we’ve noticed in other festivals on Long Island.

This year’s festival also includes great entertainment and something for everyone, such as:

o   Hundreds of vendors offering plenty of wares

o   Three stages of continuous live entertainment including  performances by Desert Highway (Friday, 8 p.m.), Big Shot (Saturday, 8:15 p.m.) and Uppercut (Sunday, 8 p.m.)

o   Beer & Wine Tent

o   Verizon Island, which includes the Snapple Tiki Bar, ESPN 3D Experience, the Just Dance Competition, and appearances by the New York Islanders Ice Girls and Sparky

o   Home Depot’s Kiddie Workshops

o   VW Auto Alley where Volkswagen will unveil the new 2012 Passat and an all-new Beetle

o   Newsday Photo Booth for your free photo with Scoop, the Newsday dog

o   Columbus Day Parade (Sunday, 12:30 p.m.) followed by Meatball Eating Contest (Sunday, 3 p.m.)

o   Petting Zoo

o   LI Blood Services will Host A Blood Drive, Sat & Sun 11am-6pm

Get out there and enjoy this once-a-year Huntington fun fest. And if you don’t want to worry about parking, there’s always the free parking at the Huntington train station with shuttle service to Heckscher Park.

The beautiful setting of Heckscher Park is perfect for the Long Island Fall Festival.

Half-price admission to the museum today.

There's gotta be some fun for dogs around here, or at least a treat or two.

These kids and their mom waited patiently on the Home Depot workshop line to make helicopters.

A man and his monkey enjoy the day while a friendly duck looks on.

This young boy actually won this monkey at the water bottle game. He really rocked that game.

I am the friendliest duck ever. Is it something in the water?

I think I can, I think I can.....

The mysterious Gravitron--the inside of the ride was kept hidden--played lots of loud rock music. The kids had a love/hate relationship with this one.

I haven't had this much fun in years.

Is my wife ever comin' back?

The Himalaya is a crowd pleaser, boasting really long lines and lots of good shrieking.

I am too cool for the Himalaya.

I heart the Himalaya.
