The Heckscher Museum of Art Presents Earth Matters and New York, New York

The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington's Heckscher Park.

The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Earth Matters, an environmental art exhibition featuring the works of selected Long Island artists.  This exhibition, which includes an installation outside the Museum walls, will be on view from Saturday, July 30 through Sunday, October 23, 2011.

On Long Island, as elsewhere, the preservation of the environment is a significant community, political, and ideological issue as human intervention continues to damage Long Island’s fragile ecology.  Artists have responded in a variety of ways that focus attention on the processes, rhythms, and beauty of the natural world and our relationship to it.  This exhibition features the work of selected Long Island artists who explore our experience of the environment in installations created from natural and recycled man-made materials.  Suffolk County artists Thea Lanzisero, Seung Lee, Winn Rea, and Barbara Roux will be included, as well as Tamiko Kawata, a New York-based artist who works on Long Island’s East End.

The Members Opening Reception is Saturday, July 30 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Also opening on July 30 is New York, New York. This permanent collection exhibition commemorates the 10th anniversary of 9/11. New York, New York pays tribute to the fortitude of New York City and the courage of her people.  New York’s multi-faceted allure is revealed in images of architectural landmarks and daily life in her many neighborhoods.  The vitality of the city is celebrated in a wide selection of works, ranging from prints and photographs that record the transformation New York experienced during major construction projects in the 1930s to images that capture common experiences of New York’s inhabitants.  Works by Berenice Abbott, Gordon Grant, N. Jay Jaffee, Edward Moran, John Sloan, Abraham Walkowitz, Guy Wiggins, Garry Winogrand, and others will be included.
