2009 – 2010 Huntington Station Crime Map

Would you be surprised to know there were 5 murders and 9 rapes in Huntington Station from 2009 - 2010?

The data in the tables and maps below was obtained by Freedom of Information filings with the Suffolk County Police Department.  We would have liked to sit with the Huntington Public Safety Director to review this data, however the Town still does not have one. So here is the county’s data on crime in our town.

MAP LEGEND: Red colors are the areas with the most crime, then orange, pink then yellow in order of decreasing levels of crime.   Each line is clickable to show the crimes that have occurred in that zone.  For a larger view, click the red full screen button.  HYBRID VIEW IS THE BEST!

In 2009 & 2010 there were 9 rape 1 (FELONY FORCEABLE) incidents in Huntington Station; 8 of the 9 were arrested, one fled the country.

A study by University of Indiana Professors Stucky and Ottensmann shows links between land use and violent crime rates.

Land use matters when it comes to predicting violent crime rates. The Indiana University study also shows that rates of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault are generally higher in areas with high-density residential developments and commercial property, and generally lower in areas characterized by industry, parks and schools.

ROBBERY 1 (Felony Armed, force able, possible injury.)

We had 41 Robbery 1 incidents from 2009 – 2010.  During the same time period there were  an additional 26 ROBBERY 2 incidents and another 8 incidents of ROBBERY 3

ASSUALT 1 (FELONY, Weapon and or Armed, depraved indifference to human life) Huntington Station had 7 of these.

  • Huntington Station Hank

Two things come to mind: The Director of Public Safety of Huntington does not have the map yet? The VT does. Are you kidding me? Thank you VT to be on top of this, shame on you, TOH, for always being behind.

Second thought: the cluster of red areas directly coincides with the highest density of Pius Section 8 houses. What needs to happen before the town sees this direct link?

    • Vivienne H.Wong

Huntington has had NO Director of Public Safety since December, 2010 when the prior one retired! We also have no Maritime Director and Director of Engineering.

    • marita eybergen

I agree with you that most of all of PIUS’s tenants are trouble. Just in our radius area is infested with PIUS homes and most of them are housed with troubled people, including the kids. And the properties are disgusting. I guess the town doesn’t care because PIUS should have been thrown out of Huntington Station along time ago. PIUS Homes are the biggest part of Huntington Station’s problems. I am pretty sure if they got rid of PIUS, we would not have all these issues. It’s all about the money for PIUS. Everyone needs to get involved and if they see something that doesn’t look right and it is not a police issue, call Code Enforcements and they will be glad to look into the matter. >

  • CRIMES GUY Says

Where is the PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR?

    • Vivienne H. Wong

The Public Safety Director does not exist! Never hired by the Town Board when the previous one gave notice last fall that he would be retiring effective 12/31/2010

  • Spector Wants to Re Open JAI?

9 rapes, 5 murders and 2 murder attempts plus a kid shot on the JAI playground and Spector wants to reopen the school. WTF?

    • Wundaboy

A kid shot on the playground of the JAS? Where did you get that from? Please document and don’t tell me to got to the 2nd PCT to confirm. Also, the map does not show any of the defined crimes in the area of the JAS.

      • Huntington Station Hank

How quickly you forget. On July 11th, 2010, a 16 year old girl was shot in the leg in the parking lot of JAI. Officers searched for bullet casings on the JAI playground, suspecting that’s where the shots were fired from. You can see the Village Tattle article here:
        http://villagetattler.com/2010/07/11/16-year-old-girl-shot-in-the-leg-at-a-party-in-huntington-station/

        • anon

School was not in session and it was the middle of the night. It stinks that a girl was injured, but you do need to factor in the times and season of these crimes. The graph above does not include the times because then you’d see that almost all the crimes occurred in the middle of the night.

          • anon

Plus, Huntington Station is a pretty big area. Those crimes did not all happen around the school. They’re all over the place, including the SD13 area.

      • Specky Doodle

To Wundaboy. “Also, the map does not show any of the defined crimes in the area of the JAS.”. What are defined crimes? The map shows ALL violent crimes, 2009-2010.

    • Wundaboy

To my knowledge there has never been a documented incident where any student or faculty member/employee of JAI has been the victim of a crime at the school or on school property.

  • Clueless

Spector is clueless…and Hebert isn’t strong enough nor does she have the inclination to get involved.
We have to vote in people that see what the future is and are determined to stop it!

  • Spector and Hebert are the ONLY way to vote

What??? First of all Jen Hebert is tough as nails. She may look girl next door, but she can stand up and advocate better than most. Second, Spector has been involved in community issues way before Dwyer, Cahill or Tully. Spector & Hebert are the ONLY votes that make sense to cast!!!

    • RWM

Just because you are “involved”, it does not mean you are either competent, able, worthy or necessarily good for what you are involved in…..or trying to lead

  • Hton is done!

Who cares your taxes are going to sky rocket, doesn’t matter who is on school board, town board screwed all tonight. And u all don’t even no. The Pope on the school board will not help, Spector or Herbert?

  • Hton is done!

Hank it certainly would make sense if u were at the public hearing on Avalon last night!

  • RWM

If the district wants to reopen Jack they should do what the town will not. Float a Bond and use the money to exercise the BOE’s ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY OF CONDEMNATION on all of the properties, Pius or not, that pose a threat to Provide a safe Environment to Learn. They can take any piece of land by Eminent Domain that they want in the district….take these, the ONLY thing that is legally contestable in court is what the value of said land is. Throw in these statistics, a closed school in the neighborhood and the plummeting of the whole Real Estate Market and you are looking at not a huge bond to take alot of these cancers away.

  • marita eybergen

Oh, one more comment, why is this not posted in every publication in Huntington Township. This should be put in the Long Islander, etc… also to show people that H/S is still a mess. Vote PIUS out of our township, they belong at the bottom of the garbage can. Get rid of PIUS, slumlord. They do not care about H/S, they only care about the $$$$$$$$. Frank, I hope you are reading this.

  • Hton is done!

    Vote Pius out?
Run his ass out of town and light it on fire.

  • Specky Doodle

This info is very telling. It shows how NY Ave is the life line to all crime! Hum. Why is that? Is it the illegal alcohol served at the bodegas? Is it the postitution at the bars? Is it the drugs at both?

You make the call, all we no is the people are illegal, the businesses are illegal, yada yada where is law enforcement, where is the public safety director on this?

  • White Wash ?

I have heard that gunshots were fired again in the station area last week but was not reported by news media. Is there a way we can find out if this was true ? The new system that detects where gun shots are located can that information be available for the public ? According to police reports assaults did take place last week in Huntington Station.

  • Specky Doodle

Shot Spotter is about a month or so away of being operationally.

  • Specky Doodle

Marita, check a new column that I was told is coming! Slumlord of the week.

  • Hton is done

Can’t wait for shot spotter, to nail these, criminals.

  • Do you believe

How many believe if we clean up the illegal housing and slumlord problem Huntington Station crime will go down?

  • Hton is done

    Yes absolutely…..

  • Specky Doodle

Marita, do you mean the Pius guy who owns like 90, rentals with like 78 or so in Hunt. Sta.? That guy? He has to be ok the HHA gives him like $150,000 a month in rental money……how bad can he be?

  • Specky Doodle

I like that condemnation deal that RWM talked about…..

  • Team 1, Team2, Team3, Team4

Yes Yes Yes did I say Yes!
