Fire Evacuates Huntington King Kullen Supermarket

A fire in a walk-in box freezer forced the evacuation of customers and employees at the King Kullen Supermarket on New York Avenue in Huntington, Saturday morning, April 30. The fire was reported to the Huntington Fire Department at 11:12 a.m., and about 45 firefighters responded with an engine, quint, heavy rescue, tower ladder and fire police. An additional engine and crew was requested to assist from the Halesite Fire Department.  The contents of the walk-in box in the meat department were damaged by the fire, which caused smoke damage throughout the store.  Firefighters used large smoke ejector fans to clear smoke from the building.  The fire was brought under control within a half-hour, under the command of Huntington Fire Chief Brian Riggs, and supported by Deputy Chiefs Ken Cochrane, Bob Berry, and Jesse Cukro. There were no injuries reported, and the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating.  The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets was notified to respond.
