Studies have found that the improper disposal of medications can have unintended negative consequences. Flushing these substances may result in groundwater contamination and simply throwing them out in the garbage provides an opportunity for abusers to gain easy access to the discarded products. As part of Suffolk County’s ongoing efforts to reduce these inappropriate medication disposal practices, Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to announce that all seven County Police Precincts now have Pharmaceutical Medication drop boxes in their lobbies staffed 24/7 so that residents with unneeded or outdated prescriptions can safely “Shed the Meds” just by taking a drive over to their nearest Police station.
There are two precincts encompassing Legislator D’Amaro’s 17th District: the First Precinct at 555 Rt 109 in West Babylon and the Second Precinct at 1071 Park Ave, Huntington.
“With prescription drug misuse on the rise amongst all populations, it is important that we get unused and unneeded medications out of our homes and away from potential abusers,” Legislator D’Amaro said. “This is a great opportunity for residents to show how much they care about their families, community and the environment. I strongly encourage everyone to check their cabinets and rid themselves of these medications safely, easily and effectively.”
