lets hear it , it was on the wekend early morning, this wasn’t close to school, school is safe (but the area is not) crime all over on and on

  • michael

lets open jai its safe, don’t worry about the shootings,
if you put kids there they won’t shoot
don’t all schools have cops in the parking lot like jai? don’t all school have shooting around the school?
what a great area to put a school, kids can learn about gun violence, types of police cars, speak to the officers. what a wonderful area to go to school

  • Don't be a (*&@#

Read the maps knuckle heads. This is NOWHERE near JAI. It is in South Huntington near West Hills Road, not far from Jericho Tpke. MUCH closer to Washington than ANY other HUFSD school.

  • John Q American

OMG!!!! Close Washington!! Close Finley!!! Close Jefferson!!! Let’s bus all the children to Flower Hill!!! Hurry Moms….get the cupcakes going!!

  • WILL

ALL YOU FOLK WHO PUT THE TIME AND ENERGY INTO SLOWING DOWN THE BUILDING OF ADDITIONAL SPACE BY VOTING NO SHOULD REFOCUS.

PUT YOUR TIME INTO SENDING YOUR KIDS WHO WANT TO BE AT JAI. YOU COULD REDUCE THE OVERCROWDING AND GET YOUR WAY OF OF KEEPING JAI OPEN. WIN WIN RIGHT?
CALL THE SCHOOL BOARD WITH YOUR PLAN TO SEND YOUR KIDS THERE

I’LL LOOK FOR THAT MEMO, GO GET EM

  • Truely

Truely this was not near JAI. People, let it go that not everything is happening in that specific school area. Let it just be said that, OUR town, yes all of our town, is in desperate need of help dealing with the guns and crime. Forget about it being about a school. It needs to be about all of us being able to be safe, day or night, no matter where we live. We all deserve it.

  • Dear Mr. Petrone,

It would appear that under your supervision that Huntington Station now appears to be the front runner for the squeal to “Boyz In The Hood”. To seal the deal with the production company I would urge you to use your influence with the County and request that we have S.C.P.D. helicopters circle our little hamlet at night with their spot lights on attempting to find those wrong doers.

    Sincerely,
    Robert Desmond

P.S. – I truly cannot wait for the 2011 elections because I will do my best to oust Ms. Berland and Ms. Jackson. You will then be a lame duck.

  • great legacy

What a legacy all the town board members will have. Excellent! A closed school due to unbelievable violence in a very small area of Huntington Station.

Do you really think people want to operate a business in this area? I don’t even want to drive down Rte. 110, and I certainly don’t want my children to drive there either.

    Clean it up! NOW!

  • Dan Fucci

Hi Mr. Desmond: I fully agree with you regarding ousting Glenda Jackson. But let me make myself clear: I am a registered republican but if Ms. Berland votes no to the Downzoning/Avalon proposal I will not only vote for her, I will actively participate in her campaign to help get her re-elected.

  • Most importantt

We need to vote out Steve Israel to make a statement to the others.

  • like it or not

Without Berlands support the downzoning would be a done deal. We need to let her know we support her taking a stand to support us.

  • just sayin'

According to Newsday, the victim was shot at 5:30am but discovered at 7:50am….”Downstairs neighbor Marion Thompson heard gunshots, she thinks three of them, shortly after 5am and told her grandchildren to get on the floor. She peaked out windows, saw nothing and heard no more suspicious noises. Sometime after 7am she said screams drew her and her grandchildren, boys 9 and 13, outside their home…where Giron was found dead, slumped over, leaning against his door”…..

Now this is sad on so many levels….a (likely) senseless death, very young children exposed and likely scarred by the crime and the discovery of the body….But to me it also speaks to why the crime problem will never end in Huntington Station….Citizens must reach out to the police! Why didn’t she call the police at 5am when she heard the shots?

Would it have made a difference? — maybe or maybe not. But in my view it’s this apathy that contributes to the problem.

People, please stand up for yourselves! Take a stand! To coin a phrase…if you see (or hear) something, say something!

Yes, our local government has to step up and do more than token gestures and blustering press conferences….but people, it’s in your hands too!

    • There's a method...

I had precisely the same reaction as I read the Newsday account. Local and county government should be doing a whole lot more to clean up HS, but telling one’s grandkids to hit the deck because you heard shooting outside and then NOT calling the cops??? Huh??? To me, that can only mean that: a) grandma had something pretty big to hide; b) she’s more scared of the police than of having her grandchildren injured or killed; c) she’s protecting someone (certainly not those children) or d) she is incredibly stupid.

What do those grandchildren take from this? I shudder to think. Congrats, Mr. Ney of Bayville. This puts you right up there with Don Pius as Landlords of the Year. Huntington Code Enforcement, here’s a novel thought: enforce the Town code on illegal rentals on a DAILY basis. As it stands, when you actually issue a citation it makes the headlines! Pathetic.

    • HS Mom

This man could be alive today if the neighbors had called the police.

  • Mom

This shooting did not happen near Jack Abrams school. This happened on 10th avenue, that is South Huntington school distict. I called the district to confirm it. I had also called news12, to correct the mistake.

    • just sayin'

Hey Mom, this is about the sustainability of a community…it’s not just about JAI and you.

      • Mom

Just sayin person, it is not about me. However Jack Abrams is closed for the crime around the school area. The reason I had made that comment because it seems that the news is always talking about Jack Abrams school and crime. It is not about me, it is about the Huntington Station schools that is going to be over-crowded.

    • John Q American

Maybe Mom can educate the SH moms on how to make placards and cupcakes.

    • HS Crime Expanding

Yes…this was SH district…and the violent murders have been now been happening outside the Stimson school too, something new this year. I expect the district will have something to say about this…heck even board members could propose to keep the only remaining grade…6th…at Stimson one more year at Maplewood and abandon Stimson.

I wouldn’t be surprised if type murderous violence spreads to CSH and Dix Hills. That’s what happens when police lose control and town govt actually embraces policies that promote these people thriving in our town.

  • Bill

The landlord at the house the murder took place is the same guy who was cited for multiple violations at several other homes a few weeks ago. His last name is Ney and he lives in Bayville.

  • To those folks who feel that supporting Ms. Berland if she votes the right way on “down zoning” is the right thing to do I respect your opinion and support your passion.

I am looking at her job performance as a whole since she was elected. Is she a part of the solution or a part of the problem? That’s the question that needs to be addressed. If she is allowed to stay in office can you trust that she will keep the loyalty of the voters in mind when another stealth project that is proposed and would adversely effect the good people of Huntington Station? The problem with Town Hall is that the path of least resistance in the vast majority of cases is to “go along” with the special interests because it’s they who will contribute to your reelection campaign. To go against the pressure without the public even having knowledge of what is actually going on in Town Hall takes character and the courage of ones convictions to stop a project in it’s tracks before it gains momentum and before the citizens have their way of life simply turned upside down with fear and uncertainty which turns to anger and frustration. Ms. Berland should have done the right thing months ago, she didn’t. Her support was assumed and the project proceeded through the process until the Dan and Ilene Fucci’s of Huntington Station stood up and said No!

Perhaps there is some redemption in Ms. Berland but that is yet to be seen. As of now her job performance from me receives a resounding “F”. She has not shown leadership only now fear of the public. Has she been proactive in getting illegal housing under control? Obviously not, this town is a mess and I would argue that she is part of the problem, not the solution.

Ms. Berland has only a very brief window to stand up and show the people what she is made of. Does she have the guts to do what’s right and to stand up and fight the slum lords hard with the army of lawyers she has at her disposal? Or, is she going to try and weather the public storm and hopes that it dies down.

I have been very quiet in August but it’s almost over. My son and daughter will be in classes filled to over capacity and I am seriously ticked off. I now have to listen to the ridiculous arguments of how we can absorb new students into the schools which we can anticipate. What we can’t anticipate are how many illegal students will also be loaded into the classrooms this year. They know that Huntington is a “sanctuary city” so the only guarantee is that the number is going to rise the only question is by how much? What is our well educated Town Council doing in anticipation of this influx? Nothing!

One guarantee that I will make is that it’s going to get a lot hotter in Town Hall as Autumn sets in.

    Regards to all,
    Robert

Just curious, what grade do you give Mr. Mayoka for his term in office? I would like to see him begin to show more leadership in Town matters too especially with his CPA/finanical credentials. I would like him to comment on Avalon and its financial implications since he has this expertise.

    • Ilene Fucci

      Hi Robert,

First, I am more than glad that you are back!!!! This is a big issue and we need all the help we can get. I will not sing the praises of Susan Berland, although after getting to know her better, my opinion is somewhat improved. You and I can talk about my reasons privately, although I cannot disagree with much of what you have said. What I will say, is that it is a terrible shame that the honest citizens of this community have to fight so hard just to live in peace. I never wanted to be so involved in such a fight, but sometimes life hands you things that are just too important to ignore. I can not describe my anger towards Frank Petrone for putting us in this position. As I often say, It didn’t have to be this way. For those who really know me personally, all I really want is to be a mom, a wife, and a friend. I certainly didn’t want to be in charge of watching our public officials. I look forward to the day that this Avalon Bay fight is over and I can claim my life back and volunteer for my community on my own terms. Not to put out fires, but to improve the community. Frankly, I do not know how Frank Petrone and Glenda Jackson look themselves in the mirror. I am still hopeful that Mark Cuthbertson will support us in the end. My last active involvement in politics will be to see that each and every one of these electeds who caused so much harm to this community are gone and forgotten. For them, this is a game. For us, this is our lives. They have no idea the pain they have caused this community. Marriages have been hurt, children have been ignored and friendships have been broken. That is the legacy of Mr. Petrones administration. I can’t imagine that this is why he went into public office, but somewhere along the way, he took a wrong turn. To the rest of Huntington, the people of this community are wonderful caring people. We have been demonized to help put through an agenda that will make a few people rich at the expense of the honest, hard working, tax paying citizens. To the members of Sd 3, stay strong and true to yourselves. The way this administration has remained strong and in power has been by dividing us and having us fight amongst each other. Rich against poor, black against white against Latino. Remember the reason why you moved to Sd 3? We all knew it was diverse when we got here. In fact, that is why we chose it. If we stay honest and we build bridges with each others, these individuals will no longer be able to take advantage of us.

so it sounds like you and your husband are not on the same page with regards to berland then…..he says he is willing to work on her campaign but it doesnt sound like you are even willing to vote for her…

        • Seriously, Kim

Don’t you have enough work to do to singlehandedly try to push Avalon through without meddling in people’s marriages? (For the record, YOUR husband must be a saint.

Please get back to work, feel free to choose one of the following topics: a. the NECESSARY railyard is coming, b. Mark Mayoka still will not be using his CPA background during his TEA Party campaign, c. someone on the school board is running for town board, d. people in SD 3 should stop having children, e. the flowers at the train station need watering, f. portrait of a neighborhood site needs more traffic, g. AB will only generate 50 kids so get the word out, h. gentrification needs more clarification, i. people want to hear more about your subsidized housing…

P.S. Judy White called and will be sending you some new scripts (thank god).

          • HS resident

Can you pls explain how u think my housing is subsidized?

          • To Kim Below....

Are you kidding – Highview is not subsidized? Sure, they just built all those houses and sold them at below market rates for the fun of it. Please be appreciative of what you were already given.

      • Carl LaFong

We moved here for a variety of reasons, chiefly on account of the lovely area and the what Huntington Village offers in the way of neighborhoods, architecture, dining, et-al, inter-alia….I don’t know about diversity, that has never occurred to me. I count among my friends and acquaintances people of all persuasions and hues….but they have one damn thing in common, they are each successfull in their respective endeavours and because of this have no tolerance for supporting those who cannot support themselves.

It may be illuminating for some to go to this http://tohgis.town.huntington.ny.us/helix/default.aspx?Map=General_External
That way one can see the greedy slumlords gathering their filthy profits from the state for providing housing to the flotsam and jetsam of life, folks who are incapable of integrating into society be they mentally ill or criminal and lacking in ethics?

  • RWM

Another reason to install ShotSpotter. 2.5 hours before the police were notified? Better make a BIG perimeter to find the shooter, the people who heard the shots gave him about a 100+ mile head start! Another A+ for “Community Involvement”

  • Dan Fucci

Robert-you are a good man and it is good to have you back in the fight! My points of attack over the next months are the continued Avalon/TOD downzone fight and the removal of limousine Steve Israel in November.

  • Dan Fucci

Kim: you are trying to use an old socialist trick to divide people. That is what you guys love to do. Please do not waste your time. It shows your desperation and weakness.

  • will

still looking for the memo for all the people who want to go to JAI to contact the school board

  • margaret

There are hundreds of people who want to go to JAI- especially now that they have seen the disgusting, overcrowded conditions the schools are in- especially southdown!!! one person I spoke to who wanted JAI said that she is willing to admit that she was wrong and that we need that school open!!

  • Well Margaret....

Probably should have left all the SD and WH families out of it. Imagine how we feel. You must admit, there were enough JAI families in the beginning who did not want their kids going there. So the BOE’s answer was to expose more people to it, as if they were going to say no problem, send my kid. If there are 100s of people who wanted JAI to remain open, then they should have been at all those BOE meetings and told them to keep things as they were and forget about this stupid 6th grade center idea. The fight should have been left between those at JAI who wanted it opened and those at JAI who wanted it closed.

My understanding is that 2.5″clear Lexan can stop anything up to a .44 Magnum.
Any J.A.I. neighborhood boosters want further info?

  • Anonymous

Attention!!! Huntington station, South Huntington People.. Look at the picture of what is going on in your community!!!

  • Anon

It was closer to Stimson, no where near JAI. Another shooting / murder in District 13. Oh Yeah I forgot . . . district 3 represents all of Huntington Station
